JalSoochak

Digital Infrastructure for Public Services

JalSoochak cover

Overview

At Arghyam, we're designing and building India's digital infrastructure, working with the government. JalSoochak is part of that work: an open-source platform under the Jal Jeevan Mission that supports 100,000+ users, with deployments involving government stakeholders in Punjab, Rajasthan and Assam.

How it works

  1. A field operator photographs the bulk flow meter (BFM) on site.
  2. An AI model extracts the reading from the photo.
  3. The operator confirms the reading or submits a correction.
  4. The confirmed reading is stored and analysed.
  5. Insights go to stakeholders through role-based dashboards.

The platform is multi-tenant, takes data from several channels including WhatsApp, mobile, web and IoT, and supports 15 Indian languages. It's built as microservices, including tenant, user, telemetry and analytics services.

In the field

India Water Portal reported on a 15-day pilot in Assam covering 150 schemes and 150 field operators, with more than 1,400 WhatsApp submissions and a reading accuracy of 97.7%.

My work

I'm a core engineering contributor, working as a Forward Deployed Engineer.

  • Turned field and operational requirements into software features, from design through deployment.
  • Built and deployed the electric meter (ELM) model, currently deployed in Punjab and Rajasthan.
  • Designed and rebuilt the bulk flow meter (BFM) solution, currently in Assam as part of the Jal Jeevan Mission.
  • Contributed to the application restructuring, modular backend services, APIs and ML inference workflows.
  • Tested end-to-end behaviour and deployed changes on AWS.
